Creative Chemistry: Celebrating Women in Science with IMCD's STEM Lab Experiments

During the "International Day of Women and Girls in Science", learning harmonizes with fun.

This edition of the IMCD STEM Lab was led by two distinguished IMCD Italy professionals: Cristina Vergani, Application Technologist for Adhesives & Sealants, and Roberta Pecchini, Technical Manager for Coatings & Construction.

Science in Action Explained to Children: A Resounding Success for the New IMCD STEM Lab

Inspiring young talents through hands-on experiences, Cristina Vergani and Roberta Pecchini guided the young chemists through the fascinating worlds of Coatings, Construction, and Adhesives with two engaging experiments.

Experiment 1: The Magic of Instant Cement

Diving into the realm of construction, participants had the chance to create a quick-hardening cement-based product. By combining sand and cement with an accelerant, they witnessed a remarkable transformation in just 10 to 15 minutes. The addition of colored pigments to the mix brought a vibrant and unique flair to the experiment.

Experiment 2: Sticker Art for Carnival

Revisiting a favourite experiment from December, the session allowed participants to craft special vinyl glue for Carnival creations. Split into two sessions, the young enthusiasts explored the adhesive's potential, culminating in small, decorated pieces featuring confetti and other creative embellishments.
The workshop involved 34 BDC School students between 7 and 9 years old. Their active participation and curiosity helped make this day of scientific exploration a learning experience.

Moreover, in our continuous effort to highlight the significant contributions of women in the sectors IMCD operates, we seized this opportunity to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Through the leadership of Cristina and Roberta — two women epitomizing professional excellence — we reaffirm our conviction in the crucial role women and girls occupy in science and technology, advocating for increased participation.

Stay tuned for more adventures, as the IMCD STEM Labs promise many more scientific discoveries in the future!
